APPLICATIONS |
Iodoform, triiodomethane containing about 96 % of iodine, is a yellow powder or crystals with a strong, penetrating odor; insoluble in water but soluble in ether, ethanol and chloroform; melting point 120 C; boiling point 120 C. It is prepared when most compounds containing the formula RCHO(H)CH3 (where R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group) such as acetone, acetaldehyde and alcohols are treated with sodium (or potassium) hydroxide and iodine. It is used as a topical anti-infective, applied to the skin. Also, it is widely used to produce Iodoform gauze.
